Moda Gallega | Más Presente Que Nunca - Vol. 1

______________________________

The love for the place where I was born plus a feeling of disproportionate homesickness have made me write a couple of new entries in my blog addressed to Galician fashion designers and brands. Some of them have been a referent of style all over the world for years and others, despite being in the fashion industry for a short time, they’re doing it beyond great!

Adolfo Domínguez
He was born in Orense, in 14 May 1950. He spent most of his childhood at the tailoring workshop of his parents and studied Philosophy and Arts in Santiago de Compostela. After living in Paris and London, in the 70s and back in Galicia he created his textile company, gaining more relevance in the 80s. He becomes the first Spanish designer with a perfume line with his own name. In the 90s, AD is the first Spanish fashion firm going to public. Adolfo Domínguez stands out for a high level of design and the use of sustainable, organic and high quality materials, such as the use of linen. Besides, his saying ‘’crease is beauty’’ is already a classic.

Roberto Verino
From Verín (Orense), he studied Fine Arts in Paris. In the 70s he assumed the family business and created a collection of jeans under the MARPY label. He presented his first female prêt-à-porter collection with the name of ROBERTO VERINO at the beginning of the 80s. More than 3 decades have passed and he’s still a fashion referent internationally. His last collection is inspired in the avant-garde and urban London fashion, always caring about the tailoring. As a curious info, when he’s not designing, he spends time with his other passion, the production of wine. He also has his own brand, Terra do Gargalo, with Apellation of Origin of Monterrey.

Florentino
Tailoring is in his veins, as his father and grandfather were also tailors. He spent four years in Barcelona studying design and working at a clothing factory at the same time. He founded his fashion firm in 1965 (this years is its 50th birthday!!), and the 100% of its production takes place in Spain. In the 80s, GRUPO FLORENTINO develops two versions of the firm: one of them more classic and the other one more sport. Noble fabrics with great quality, together with a caring design define Florentino. As Verino himself, he also has received the Medalla Castelao, a distinction for those distinguished Galician people whose professional careers are worth rewarding.

CARAMELO
José Antonio Caramelo founded the firm in 1969 with the purpose of creating impermeable quality clothes. In 1971 he started distributing 3 male lines (Tommy Harrods jackets, Chelton trousers and Yale shirts). It’s in the 80s when the label was born as we know it nowadays, with clothes both for men and women. In 2003, CARAMELO is present in more than 20 countries and in 2005, after acquiring Antonio Pernas, the firm started its expansion all around Spain. CARAMELO by Antonio Pernas was born in 2009, together with its ceremonial female collection. Nowadays, we can find CARAMELO at the main capitals of Spain, in any of the shopping centres El Corte Inglés.

Purificación García
Born in Orense as well, she developed her first job at a textile company in Montevideo. After living in Canada and New York, she came back to Spain at the end of the 70s, ettling in Barcelona. She presented her first collection in 1981, and the first store she opened was in Belgium in 1985. Her first collection in Milan took place in 1989, with a very warm welcome. Apart from designing, she published the book Tener Estilo (Having Style) in 2001 and, in 2003, she created the Purificación García Photograph Award, a prestigious contest with more than 9 editions. She defines herself a meticulous, obstinate and tough woman, qualities that, undoubtedly, have made her reach the top.

Uxía and María Domínguez are the two sisters at the head of the firm, which has the operational centre in Mos (Pontevedra). Fashion has always been present in their lives: they are the nieces of Adolfo Domínguez and the daughters of Jesús Domínguez, founding partner of STL (the 2nd biggest fashion group in Galicia after Inditex). After opening the first store in Bilbao in 2006, this Galician brand has had a frenetic expansion, becoming the Spanish firm with a higher development of the country. Quality products with competitive prices in more than 160 stores distributed in 17 countries. The logo of the label, a greyhound, is already an icon (the name comes from Uxía and María’s pets).
